József Eötvös was born in 1962 in Pécs, Hungary. He was a student of Roland Zimmer at the „Franz Liszt” High School of Music in Weimar, where he also studied composition under Franz Just. He became known after winning several international competitions between 1985 and 1988. Thereafter, he received invitations to play concerts in many countries, among them Austria, Bohemia, Germany, Greece, Lithuania, Romania, Sweden and Slovakia.

He has frequently recorded for radio and television in his own country and abroad. He proved an excellent music pedagogue in his master classes, mainly on Baroque or chamber music. He has often been a member of international juries at guitar competitions and is the artistic director of the international Guitar Festival of Esztergom, Hungary. He has been teaching at the Liszt Ferenc High School of Music in Budapest since 1992, and upon his initiative, guitar departments were established there as well as in Pécs. Thanks to him, an old dream of Hungarian guitarists came true when he established guitar classes at university level in 1996. His compositions (Willow Variations, Fünf Aphorismen) and his transcriptions of Chopin Valses and Bach’s Goldberg Variations are published.

In 1997 József Eötvös recorded J. S. Bach‘s Goldberg Variations in his own transcription as a world premiere followed by this second CD with Chopin‘s works in 1999.
